How to Get Verified on YouTube: Requirements and Steps

Verification is one of the most searched YouTube questions and one of the least understood. It is a check that a channel is who it says it is, not a reward for growth. This guide sets out what YouTube Help says about who can apply, how to apply, what can cost you the badge and what the badge does not do, and says plainly where the help page is silent.

What does the YouTube verification badge mean?

YouTube Help says that when you see a verification check mark next to a channel's name, YouTube has verified that channel. A verified channel is the official channel of a creator, artist, company or public figure, and the badge helps tell official channels apart from others with similar names.

Two limits come from the same page. Verified channels do not get extra features on YouTube, and the badge does not represent an award, a milestone or an endorsement from YouTube. The page also says verification has changed over time, so you may see several types of verified channels.

What do you need before you can apply?

After you apply, YouTube reviews the channel and verifies channels that are authentic and complete. Authentic means the channel represents the real creator, brand or entity it claims to be, and YouTube checks factors such as the age of the channel and may ask for more information or documentation.

To give a sense of scale, we looked at our own tracked channels. This is our data from the snapshot of September 26, 2026, and the set is built from charts, lookups and discovery, so it leans toward large channels (the median has 216,000 subscribers). It says nothing about how many YouTube channels are eligible.

How do you apply for verification? Step by step

   Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer

   Use the account that owns or manages the channel, and the email address of the eligible channel.

   Open Settings, then Channel, then Verified badge

   If the Verified badge tab does not appear, YouTube Help says the channel is not eligible based on the 100,000-subscriber requirement.

   Fix anything the page asks for

   With 100,000 subscribers but no 2-Step Verification or a complete profile, you will see the option to turn on 2-Step Verification or edit your profile.

   Click Apply

   The Apply option appears once all the requirements are met.

   Wait for the review

   YouTube reviews the channel and may ask for more information or documentation.

One detail saves confusion. YouTube Help says its systems sometimes take a few days to update, so if you recently reached 100,000 subscribers or turned on 2-Step Verification and still cannot open the form, check back in a few days.

How long does verification take, and what if you are rejected?

The help page we read gives no review time, and it gives no waiting period or appeal process for verification. Pages elsewhere that quote a number disagree with each other, from about a week to several weeks, so treat any specific figure as unconfirmed. What you can do is check the list above: a public channel, a banner, a profile picture, a description, at least one public video, and content that shows an active channel. If you were not verified, fix anything on that list and keep the channel authentic and complete.

Can you get verified with fewer than 100,000 subscribers?

Not by applying. The tab does not appear below the bar. YouTube Help adds that YouTube may sometimes proactively verify channels with fewer than 100,000 subscribers that are well known outside YouTube, and it describes no way to ask for that. If your channel is not verified, the same page suggests three ways to stand out: a unique channel name or handle, a high-quality profile picture, and a customized channel layout and branding. What removes or changes the badge?

The name limit matters here. YouTube Help says you can change a channel name twice within a 14-day period, and that changing it removes the badge. If you want a new address and not a new name, change the handle. Our guide to changing your channel name covers the steps and the limits.

Does verification help you earn or rank?

Verification and monetization are separate. Ad revenue in the Partner Program needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, and none of it depends on a badge. A verified channel is not necessarily monetized, and a monetized channel is not necessarily verified. Our monetization application guide covers that process.

On reach, YouTube Help says verified channels get no extra features. We found no YouTube page saying the badge changes search results or recommendations, so we do not claim it does.

Fake badges, impersonation and Official Artist Channels

YouTube Help says it will not verify channels that try to impersonate another creator or brand, and that a channel deliberately impersonating someone may face further action. Its impersonation policy lists what counts: copying another channel's branding, content or usernames; workarounds such as typos, special fonts or extra punctuation to look like a different creator; and copying profile pictures, banners or color schemes, even when the channel is not 100% identical, as long as the intent is clear. A fan channel should state so in its name or handle. If your channel is impersonated, report it.

An Official Artist Channel is a separate program. YouTube Help says to be eligible you must own and operate a single artist's or band's channel focused on the music, have at least one official release delivered by a music distributor or label, and follow all YouTube policies, plus meet one more condition such as being in the Partner Program. You request it through your label or distributor, not through the Verified badge form.

Two mix-ups come up often. Verifying your Google account by phone, which YouTube Help says lets an account upload videos longer than 15 minutes, is a different thing from the badge. And the Studio form is the only route the help page describes, so anyone offering to arrange a badge for a fee is not offering something YouTube documents.
