How to Get Monetized on YouTube: The Full Process

TL;DR

  • Applying takes a few clicks in YouTube Studio (Earn, then Apply Now), but review takes about a month, and YouTube Help says delays are possible. A first rejection can be appealed within 21 days or retried after 30 days.
  • The subscriber and watch-hour numbers only get you the right to apply. Reviewers judge the channel as a whole against the monetization policies, and originality is the test that fails most often.
  • Faceless and AI-assisted channels are not banned. YouTube Help lists what it will not monetize: template-driven and repetitive content, off-putting or manipulative content, and AI personas giving advice on health, law, finance or politics.
  • Ads on a video do not prove a channel is paid. YouTube Help says ads may appear on videos you have not monetized, and its Terms say the agreement does not entitle you to any payments. In our sample, ad markers showed on 58% of channels with 100 to 999 subscribers.

Most guides to getting monetized stop at "reach 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours." The number is the easy part. The rest is an application, a review by people and automated systems, an AdSense account, tax forms and, for a lot of channels, a judgement call about whether the videos are original enough. This guide walks through all of it, using YouTube's own pages for every rule, press reporting for the recent changes, and a small measurement of our own.

What do you need before you apply?

YouTube Help sets two entry levels. For ad and Premium revenue sharing, a channel needs 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. In eligible countries, an earlier level opens fan funding and Shopping features at 500 subscribers, 3 valid public uploads in 90 days, and 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views.

Rules change on February 1, 2027. New applicants for ad revenue will need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views, and earning from Shorts ads will need 10 million Shorts views over 90 days. Our requirements guide and the Shorts monetization guide cover the numbers, so this article covers the process.

Other conditions apply too. YouTube Help also asks for these:

  • No active Community Guidelines strikes, and a channel that follows the monetization policies.
  • A country or region where the program is available.
  • 2-Step Verification on the Google Account, and advanced features access.
  • One active AdSense for YouTube account linked to the channel, or readiness to set one up in Studio. The account holder must be 18 or older. YouTube Help says a creator under 18 can only monetize by linking an approved account of a parent or guardian over 18.

Two details from the same page save time. Only public content counts: private, unlisted and deleted videos, ad campaigns and Shorts feed watch time do not add to the 4,000 hours, and livestreams do not count if they are unlisted, deleted or not converted to video on demand. Select Get notified in the Earn area of Studio and YouTube emails you when you reach a threshold.

How do you apply for YouTube monetization? Step by step

  1. 01

    Open Earn in YouTube Studio

Sign in, open Studio from your profile picture, choose Earn in the left menu and select Apply Now. Both a computer and a mobile device work.

  2. 02

    Accept the base terms

Click Start to review and accept the Partner Program base terms.

  3. 03

Create or link AdSense for YouTube

Click Start on the AdSense step. Create a new account only inside Studio, since one made on the AdSense homepage will not work. YouTube Help says approval of a new account can take up to several days.

  4. 04

    Wait in the review queue

When Get Reviewed shows In Progress, YouTube has your application. Automated systems and human reviewers look at the channel as a whole.

  5. 05

    Read the decision in Earn

YouTube Help says a decision comes typically in about 1 month, with possible delays, and applications are handled in the order received.

One account rule catches people out. YouTube Help says you can have only one AdSense or AdSense for YouTube account under the same payee name, and a duplicate is disapproved and monetization for the channel turned off. Changing the linked account later is limited to once every 32 days.

What do YouTube reviewers check?

YouTube Help says reviewers cannot check every video, so they may focus on your channel's main theme, most viewed videos, newest videos, the biggest share of watch time, video metadata such as titles, thumbnails and descriptions, and the About section. Whatever they find is read against the channel monetization policies, which sit on top of the Community Guidelines, copyright and the advertiser-friendly guidelines.

PolicyFine to monetizeNot eligible

Policies that decide most applications (YouTube Help)

YouTube Help adds that the reused content policy applies to your channel as a whole, and that if it cannot clearly tell you made the content, monetization can be removed from the entire channel.

Can faceless and AI-generated channels be monetized?

Nothing in YouTube's monetization policy page uses the word faceless or asks for a person on screen. Its tests are whether each video is materially varied, has a narrative and adds value. In our reading, a faceless channel with real research, a script written for it and different videos can pass. A faceless channel that swaps a topic into a fixed template usually does not.

On AI, the same page is specific. It allows using AI to edit scripts, generate a unique background visual or bring a character and narrative you invented to life. It says that when you use automated tools or templates, the final video must still show your creative vision. What it rules out is content that gives the impression of mass production without the creator's own insight.

The policy got sharper recently. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed its repetitious content policy to inauthentic content, saying it covers content that is repetitive or mass-produced and that such content was already ineligible. TechCrunch reported on July 20, 2026 that YouTube had clarified the policy into three categories, rolled out on July 16, and quoted YouTube's trust and safety chief Matt Halprin saying that the same tools that help make great videos also let people make many similar, generic videos, which is what YouTube does not want in the program. TechCrunch reports that Halprin said a channel with too much of any of the three types will not be able to monetize. YouTube's CEO wrote in January 2026 that YouTube is building on its systems against spam and clickbait to reduce the spread of low quality AI content.

Disclosure is a separate rule. YouTube Help requires creators to disclose realistic content made or meaningfully altered with AI, through the AI use setting in Studio. Examples that need a label include AI-generated music, and realistic footage of events that did not happen. Scripts, thumbnails, captions, idea generation and cloning your own voice for voice-overs do not need one. Two facts matter for income. Disclosing does not limit a video's audience or its eligibility to earn, and creators who consistently skip disclosure can face penalties including removal of content or suspension from the Partner Program.

If you run an automated pipeline, treat these as our suggestions and not YouTube's rules:

  • Vary the structure, topic angle and visuals between videos, so no two are interchangeable.
  • Write scripts around a point of view, and add your own commentary, testing or reporting.
  • Stay away from AI hosts giving health, legal, money or political advice.
  • Label realistic AI footage and music, and keep records of how each video was made.
  • Do not scale output before you know the channel passes review. Our niches guide covers which topics and formats suit this model.

Do ads on a video mean the channel is monetized?

YouTube Help says ads may appear on your uploaded videos even if you have not monetized them yourself, and that YouTube may also place ads on videos in channels not in the Partner Program. YouTube's Terms of Service say you grant YouTube the right to monetize your content, which may include displaying ads on or within it, and that the agreement does not entitle you to any payments. Ads can therefore run on videos from a channel that pays its owner nothing.

We measured how often that happens. On September 26, 2026 we drew a seeded random sample of 60 channels from each of three subscriber bands in our tracked set, each with at least 10 videos. For each channel we took up to three of its most recent public long-form uploads, meaning longer than 3 minutes, not made for kids and not age-restricted, from its latest 25 uploads. We read each video's watch page for the two markers the player uses to schedule ads, the ad-enabled flag and the ad placement list. A channel counts as showing ads when at least one video had both. A page counts only if YouTube returned a real player page, and pages that came back as a rate limit or a consent screen were fetched again later. In the smallest band, 7 pages never returned a player page.

10,000 to 99,99960262284.6%

Channels with ad markers on at least one recent long-form video, by subscribers (our data, 26 September 2026)

Ad markers were as common on channels with 100 to 999 subscribers, which are below the 1,000-subscriber ad bar, as on channels with 1,000 to 9,999. The bar does not show up in the markers. Above 10,000 subscribers, 22 of 26 channels showed ads, and the other 34 sampled channels in that band had no eligible long-form upload among their last 25 and were left out. The samples are small, come from channels our site tracks, and cannot see watch hours, Partner Program membership or why an individual video has ads off. Some small channels may be members that fell below the bar, since YouTube does not remove them automatically. So treat the table as an illustration and not as a rate for YouTube. What it does show is that ads on a video are a signal and not a verdict, and that is how our Monetization Checker reports them.

What if your application is rejected?

YouTube Help says a rejection means human reviewers believe a significant portion of the channel does not meet the policies. The rejection email names the policies. After a first rejection you can re-apply 30 days after the email, and after any later one, 90 days. You can appeal within 21 days regardless of how many attempts you have made.

  1. 01

    Read the email

It tells you which policies the channel violated.

  2. 02

Audit titles, descriptions, thumbnails and tags

YouTube Help tells you to review these, and the videos, against the monetization policies and the Community Guidelines.

  3. 03

Edit or delete the videos that violate them

Then keep uploading original content. YouTube says it cannot promise approval after you fix the channel.

  4. 04

    Appeal or wait

Appeal within 21 days if you believe it was a mistake, or re-apply after the wait. The review takes about a month again.

What happens after you are approved?

Being accepted opens the door, and each feature still needs its own terms. YouTube Help says you review and accept the relevant module terms to turn on watch page ads, Shorts feed ads, memberships and Supers, and that some features may not be available to you because of local law or support capacity. YouTube's tips page suggests trying one feature at a time. New videos can go through an ad suitability check that may include a human, and in some cases a monetization decision can take up to 24 hours, according to the monetization policies page. Self-rating your videos through YouTube's self-certification helps it decide faster and more accurately. On monetized videos of 8 minutes or longer you can turn on mid-roll ads, and YouTube Help says a slot is not guaranteed to serve an ad.

Two admin jobs come early. Google must collect tax information from every creator in the program, wherever they live. YouTube Help says to submit it by December 10 each year, that without it Google may be required to deduct up to 24% of your total earnings worldwide, and that tax forms expire at the end of the third full calendar year after signing. Then come the revenue thresholds for tax info, identity and address verification, payment method selection and payment itself, which vary by the currency of your AdSense account. Our earnings guide has the payment timeline and thresholds.

Keep the channel active. YouTube Help says it may turn off monetization on channels that have not uploaded or posted for 6 months or more, and that channels lose monetization if they violate the monetization policies, whatever their subscriber count.

How do you earn before or beyond ads?

YouTube's August 2026 announcement says channels below the 10 million Shorts view line will get new incentive programs, such as bonuses for YouTube Shopping, incentives for brand deals and earnings boosts for starting and growing trends, with details to come. The entry levels for fan funding and Shopping stay the same.

Sponsorships and affiliate links sit outside YouTube's revenue share and under the law. The US Federal Trade Commission tells creators to disclose any financial relationship with a brand, including free or discounted products. Its guide says the disclosure belongs in the video itself, since a note in the description alone can be missed, and that terms such as "ad" or "sponsored" work while "sp" or "collab" do not. The FTC adds that US law applies to a creator posting from abroad when it is reasonably foreseeable that the post will affect US consumers. Before you qualify, affiliate links, sponsorships, services, digital products and your own store need no Partner Program access, and the same disclosure rules apply. Rates vary by channel and nothing here is guaranteed.

How long will 4,000 watch hours take?

Watch hours are views times minutes watched, so the time to the bar is arithmetic you can run on your own numbers. The table uses invented inputs, not data: public long-form views a day and average minutes watched per view, and it shows the days to reach 4,000 hours. From February 1, 2027 the bar for new applicants is 8,000 hours, which doubles every figure. Because the window is 12 months, you need an average of about 11 hours a day to make 4,000 in a year.

Public long-form views a day2 minutes watched4 minutes watched8 minutes watched
1001,200 days600 days300 days
300400 days200 days100 days
1,000120 days60 days30 days

Days to 4,000 watch hours at a steady pace (our arithmetic, invented inputs)

The lever is minutes watched per view as much as views. Doubling the average watch time halves the wait, which is why one 15-minute video watched to the end counts for as much as four 4-minute videos.

How do you reach the bar faster?

  • Count only what counts. Public long-form watch hours and public Shorts feed views qualify. A promoted video does not, and Shorts hours do not add to the 4,000 hours.
  • Pace yourself. Metricool's 2026 study of 799,718 videos across 71,177 accounts, reported by Tubefilter, found 61% of measured views came from the Shorts feed and advised 2 to 4 long-form videos a week for the most views. It is one company's dataset, and its advice is a rule of thumb.
  • Pick the route that fits your format. Our first 1,000 subscribers guide covers the subscriber side, and our Shorts vs long-form comparison helps choose.
  • Check your standing. Our Monetization Checker shows the public signals for any channel, and the guide on telling whether a channel is monetized explains how far to trust them.

Confidence note

The entry levels, application steps, review times, rejection rules, policies, AI disclosure, tax and payment rules come from YouTube Help pages, and the CEO letter and the August 2026 announcement from YouTube's blog. The Terms of Service sentence is quoted from YouTube's Terms. TechCrunch, Tubefilter and the FTC are cited for reporting, industry data from Metricool and Little Dot, and disclosure law. The ad-marker measurement is ours: a random sample of channels from our tracked set, read on the date shown, with the limits listed above it. The advice in the automated pipeline list is our own judgement. YouTube changed these rules in July 2025, July 2026 and August 2026, so check the Help pages before you apply.

FAQ

How long does YouTube take to review a monetization application?

YouTube Help says a decision typically comes in about 1 month, and that delays are possible. Applications are handled in the order received.

Can I get monetized with a faceless channel?

Yes, if the videos are original, varied and add value. YouTube's policy page does not require a person on screen.

Will YouTube demonetize my AI-generated videos?

Not for using AI as such. YouTube Help allows AI to help edit scripts or create visuals for your own narrative, and it excludes templated, mass-produced content, off-putting content and AI personas giving advice on sensitive topics.

Do I have to label AI content?

Yes when it is realistic and made or meaningfully altered with AI. Scripts, captions, thumbnails and idea generation do not need a label. Consistently skipping disclosure can lead to penalties, including suspension from the Partner Program.

How long until I can re-apply after a rejection?

30 days after the first rejection email and 90 days after any later one. You can also appeal within 21 days.

Can I lose monetization after I am accepted?

Yes. YouTube Help says a channel loses monetization if it violates the monetization policies, and that it may turn monetization off for channels inactive for 6 months or more.

Can I get monetized with 500 subscribers?

Partly. At 500 subscribers, 3 valid public uploads in 90 days and either 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views, YouTube Help says fan funding and Shopping features open in eligible countries. Ad revenue needs 1,000 subscribers.

Do I need to be 18 to get paid by YouTube?

The AdSense account holder must be 18 or older. YouTube Help says a creator under 18 can only monetize by linking an approved account of a parent or guardian over 18.

How many views do I need to make $1,000?

At our calculator's $4.20 base rate it is about 238,000 views, and from about 97,000 to 348,000 across its range. Those rates are our assumptions, and your own RPM in Analytics decides.

Are ads on my videos proof that I am monetized?

No. YouTube Help says ads may appear on videos you have not monetized, and its Terms say the agreement does not entitle you to payments. You are monetized when you are in the Partner Program and linked to AdSense.
