How to Choose a YouTube Channel Name and Handle

Most naming advice is about being clever. The parts that can cost you are more mundane: a handle you cannot get, a name nobody can spell, a badge you lose because you changed your mind. This guide covers the limits YouTube documents and a simple way to test ideas.

Name and handle are separate

Your channel name is the title of your channel. Your handle is the unique @name that identifies it. YouTube Help says you can change your channel name twice within a 14-day period. The same limit applies to the handle, and YouTube holds your previous handle for 14 days if you want to switch back.

Two consequences follow. You are not locked in on day one, and a change is not free: YouTube Help says changing your name will remove your verification badge. If you already have a badge, treat the name as fixed.

Also note that a channel's name and picture, once changed, are visible only on YouTube. YouTube Help says you can change your Google Account name and picture separately, without touching the channel.

What tends to work, and what is only our view

YouTube does not publish rules about what makes a good channel name beyond its policies, so the rest of this section is our judgement.

• Choose something you can say aloud once and have another person type correctly. If you have to spell it, you lose people who would have searched for you.
• Prefer a name that can outlive one topic. A name tied to a narrow subject is harder to keep if your videos move on.
• Check that the handle matches or is close to the name. Viewers see both.
• Avoid characters that are hard to describe in conversation. YouTube allows underscores, hyphens and periods in handles, but they are awkward to read out.

None of this is measured. We are not aware of a study showing that one style of name grows faster than another, and we would not trust one that claimed to.

Testing ideas before you commit

Use the Channel Name Generator to turn a few keywords into handle ideas and see which ones look free. Then use the Channel Name Availability Checker to scan a longer list at once. Both work by looking at the public page for a handle: if the page does not exist, the handle is reported as available.

That test has a limit worth remembering. A missing page means the handle is not taken right now. It does not prove YouTube will let you claim it, and YouTube's handle rules say it can reclaim or remove a handle at any time.

   Set up the channel on YouTube. If you use tools or APIs later, look up the channel ID with the Channel ID Finder. YouTube Help describes the ID as unique to the channel, which makes it the safer reference.
