YouTube Private vs Unlisted vs Public: What Each Does

Published 2026-10-15 · 7 min read · YTDetective

TL;DR

  • Public: anyone can find and watch it. It is posted on your channel, can appear in search and related videos, and goes to your subscribers' feed.
  • Unlisted: anyone with the link can watch and reshare it, with no Google Account needed. It stays off your channel's Videos tab, out of search and out of the subscriber feed, but comments still work.
  • Private: only you and the people you invite by email can watch it. No comments, nothing in search, nothing on the channel.
  • Only public long-form videos earn qualified watch hours for the Partner Program. Unlisted and private views do not count.

YouTube gives every video one of three visibility settings, and the difference between unlisted and private is the one people mix up most. Both keep a video off your channel page. The difference is who gets in: a link is enough for unlisted, an invitation is needed for private. Everything below comes from YouTube Help's page on privacy settings unless we say otherwise.

Public, unlisted and private videos compared (YouTube Help)

Two details on that page catch people out. An unlisted video can surface in search if someone puts it in a public playlist, so unlisted is not a lock. And anyone who has the link can pass it on, so you cannot control where an unlisted link travels once it leaves you.

Private is the only setting where you choose each viewer. YouTube Help says private videos may still be reviewed by YouTube's systems and human reviewers for ad suitability, copyright and abuse prevention, so a private video is hidden from other viewers while YouTube can still look at it.

When should you use each setting?

You want toUseWhy
Publish to everyonePublicThe only setting that reaches search, recommendations and subscribers
Send a draft to a client or editorPrivateOnly invited people can open it, so a forwarded link is useless
Share with a group without accounts, such as a class or a familyUnlistedThe link works without a Google Account, and comments stay on
Embed a tutorial on your own site but keep it off the channelUnlistedAnyone with the link can watch it, which is what an embedded player needs
Keep an old video without deleting itPrivate or unlistedPrivate hides it fully; unlisted keeps existing links working

Which setting fits which job (our recommendations, based on the rules above)

A note on the last row. If other pages or playlists already link to the video, making it private breaks those links for everyone you did not invite. Unlisted keeps them working while taking the video off your channel.

Do unlisted or private videos count for monetization?

Not toward watch hours. YouTube Help's Partner Program page says qualified watch hours come from public long-form videos, and lists private videos, unlisted videos and deleted videos among the views that do not count. Our monetization requirements guide has the full list and the February 2027 changes.

This also affects anyone checking a channel from outside. Unlisted and private videos do not show on the channel page, so a channel's public video list can be shorter than what it has uploaded. Our Playlist Analyzer and Metadata Viewer read what YouTube makes public, and a private video returns no data to them.

How do you change a video's visibility?

  1. 01

Open YouTube Studio and choose Content

Live uploads sit under the Live tab.

  2. 02

    Hover over the video

    Open the dropdown under Visibility.

  3. 03

    Pick Public, Unlisted or Private

To share a private video, click the video, open the Visibility box, choose Share privately and enter email addresses.

  4. 04

    Save

The change applies to the video; any links to it follow the new rules.

YouTube Help adds that the default setting for creators aged 13 to 17 is private, and public for creators 18 and older. Either can change it.

What can a viewer tell from the outside?

Not much. The YouTube Data API documents three values for a video's privacy status: public, private and unlisted. A viewer who opens an unlisted link sees an ordinary watch page. Our reading of the help page is that the setting controls who can find the video. Nothing on the page says viewers are told a video is unlisted, so do not rely on them knowing.

Confidence note

The visibility rules, the Studio steps, the default for teen creators and the review of private videos come from YouTube Help's privacy settings page, and the watch-hour rule from its Partner Program page, both read on October 15, 2026. The help page does not say whether invited viewers of a private video need a Google Account or how many people you can invite, so we state neither. The table of uses is our recommendation, not YouTube's.

FAQ

Can people find my unlisted video?

Only with the link, or if someone adds it to a public playlist. YouTube Help says unlisted videos do not appear in search unless they are in a public playlist, and they never appear on your channel's Videos tab or in the subscriber feed.

Is unlisted or private safer?

Private. Only the people you invite by email can watch it. An unlisted link can be reshared by anyone who has it.

Can people comment on unlisted videos?

Yes. YouTube Help says comments are available on unlisted videos and not available on private ones.

Do subscribers get notified about unlisted videos?

No. Unlisted videos do not go to the subscriber feed. Only public videos do.

Do unlisted videos count toward the 4,000 watch hours?

No. YouTube Help lists private, unlisted and deleted videos among the views that do not count as qualified watch hours.

Can I make an unlisted video public later?

Yes. Change the Visibility setting in YouTube Studio under Content. The same dropdown switches any video between public, unlisted and private.
